As you know Johnson and Murphy is a well established American company started in 1850 in Newark, New Jersey. Originally called the William J. Dudley Shoe Company after the owner.
James Johnson joined the company as partner in 1880. When Dudley died the name was changed to James Johnson Company.
In 1885 William A. Murphy, a businessman bought into the company and it was renamed Johnson and Murphy.
